Learning a foreign language encourages pupils’ curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world. At Monkshouse Primary School, French is taught throughout Key Stage 2.

In Years 3 and 4, the focus is on the oral application of the language, building up vocabulary, joining in with songs and rhymes and being able to engage in short conversations using accurate pronunciation.

In Years 5 and 6, more emphasis is placed on the written language. Children broaden their vocabulary, read sentences with accurate pronunciation and begin to understand the grammar and features of the language through writing simple sentences.
