Parental Information
We request that parents notify school of any particular medical problems or allergies. It is really important that you keep the school informed and up to date with your correct contact details in case we need to contact you in an emergency. If you change your phone number or address please inform the office immediately using the Emergency Contact Form.
Emergency Contact Form (Medical)
If your child has medication, you need to come in to school and fill the Medication Form in, appropriate medication is to be clearly labelled with instructions of use. If your child is off sick, please ring the office in the morning to let us know your child will not be attending that day.
If your child has sickness or diarrhoea they must be off at least 48 hours after the last incident. It is very important you do not allow your child to come back before this time because even though they may appear to be better, they can still be carrying the virus which can cause other children to catch the sickness.
Guidelines from the NHS
When your child is unwell, it can be hard deciding whether to keep them off school. A few simple guidelines can help. Not every illness needs to keep your child away from school. Use common sense when deciding whether or not your child is too ill to attend school. Ask yourself the following questions:
- Is your child well enough to do the activities of the school day? If not, keep your child at home.
- Does your child have a condition that can be passed on to other children or school staff? If so, keep your child at home.
- Would you take a day off work if you had this condition? If so, keep your child at home.
Common Conditions
If your child is ill, it’s likely to be due to one of a few minor health conditions.
Whether you send your child to school will depend on how severe you think the illness is. This guidance can help you make that judgement.
Remember: if you’re concerned about your child’s health, consult a health professional.
- Cough & Cold – A child with a minor cough or cold may attend school. If the cold is accompanied by a raised temperature, shivers or drowsiness, the child should stay off school, visit the GP and return 24 hours after they start to feel better. If your child has a more severe and long-lasting cough, consult your GP. They can give guidance on whether the child should stay off school.
- Raised Temperature – If your child has a raised temperature, they shouldn’t attend school. They can return 24 hours after they start to feel better.
- Rash – Rashes can be the first sign of many infectious illnesses, such as chickenpox and measles. Children with these conditions shouldn’t attend school. If your child has a rash, check with your GP or practice nurse before sending them to school.
- Headache – A child with minor headache doesn’t usually need to be kept off school. if the headache is more severe or is accompanied by other symptoms, such as raised temperature or drowsiness, then keep the child off school and consult your GP.
- Vomiting and Diarrhoea – Children with these conditions should be kept off school. they can return 48 hours after their symptoms disappear. Most cases of vomiting or diarrhoea get better without treatment, but if symptoms persist, consult your GP.
- Sore Throat – A sore throat alone doesn’t have to keep a child from school. If it’s accompanied by a raised temperature, the child should stay at home.

Global Ambassadors
What are Global Ambassadors?
Our Global Ambassadors at Monkshouse Academy help us to think about the world around us. They speak a variety of different languages and important in promoting diversity within our school community. Global Ambassadors are asked to put themselves forward for the role at the beginning of Year 6 and pupils who speak different languages are encouraged to apply for the position.
What is the role of a Global Ambassador?
Our Global Ambassadors at Monkshouse Academy help to promote the broad spectrum of cultures and countries we have represented within our school community. They help to organise events which promote global learning and help children to understand the world around them. Such events include: Fairtrade Fortnight, International Day and African Walk to School Day.
Eco Warriors
What are Eco Warriors?
The Eco Warriors encourage and work with the whole school to maintain a green and clean environment. Our aim is to raise awareness of the importance of looking after our world to make it a better place.
What is the role of an Eco Warrior?
The role of the Eco Warrior is aimed at reducing our carbon footprint by:
- Litter picking daily
- Encouraging recycling
- Promoting switching off lights and electrical equipment
- Reporting leaking taps
- Tracking the schools energy use
How are Eco Warriors selected?
At the start of each academic year, anyone who wishes to stand for the role is invited to write a short manifesto, to the Eco Leaders, as to why they would be good at the job.
Sports Captains
Sports Captains at Monkshouse Academy are a great help when it comes to organising and running inter-house competitions. They help select teams as well as training and preparing them for competitions. When it comes to sports day they help to run the events and organise the equipment.
We are looking to involve the sports captains more in lunchtime outdoor play activities during the forthcoming year.
House Captains
Roles and Responsibilities
House captains support all members of Griffin house to go for gold in everything they do. They are positive role models with their attitude to their learning and personal conduct across the school.
They support the sports captain to lead teams during the inter-house events and competitions, organising practices during lunch and break times (with support from staff members of our house) and coaching them to strive to do their best.
House Captains are also asked to present one house assembly a term on a given theme, demonstrating good public speaking and confidence.
The school operates a house system and the children are allocated on entry to school, to one of four houses:
- Griffin,
- Unicorn,
- Phoenix and
- Centaur
They are given a house T-shirt in one of the four house colours, which they use for PE and any house competitions. House points are awarded in class for a variety of reasons e.g. good work, good behaviour and are collected each week with the winning house being announced in celebration assembly on Fridays.
Parent, Teacher Association (PTA)
Welcome to the PTA section.
The PTA is an active committee of parents and teachers of Monkshouse Primary Academy whose aim is to raise money to provide equipment and resources to enhance and benefit the pupils. All parents are welcome to become members of the PTA and attend the meetings.
The PTA organises events throughout the school year which have included both Summer and Christmas Fairs, School Discos, Children’s Film Nights, Ladies Pamper Evenings and Fashion Shows. We also offer assistance at Sports Days, Easter Tea and any other event which requires our help.
Where does the money go?
Historically the PTA have provided money for the purchase of outdoor play equipment for the Nursery and Reception class, the Trim Trail, Lockers, Digital & Video Cameras, iPad tablets, P.A equipment and curtains for the new school hall, furniture for the new Library, equipment for the 2016 new classroom, outside benches and parasols.
Yearly the PTA provides money for everything listed below, because of your continued support at all of our events:
- Subsidied school trips by paying towards the cost of buses and a contribution per child
- Initial water bottle and bookbag for new Reception class children
- Book Tokens and money for prizes/games at the end of each term for every class in the school
- Pantomime visits
- Reception and Nursery Christmas party and presents for all children
- Year 6 Leavers party and memory flash drives
- Playground and lunchtime resources
- Science week
- And much, much, much more!
Become a member
All parents are welcome to become members of the PTA and attend the meetings. We would love to see you, whether you are mums, dads, carers or even grandparents! We meet once a month for approx an hour, to discuss forthcoming events, new ideas, receive financial updates and explore how to spend the funds raised.
If you would like to speak to anyone please either contact the school on 01775 722006, or speak to any of the members of the PTA in the playground.
Parent Feedback
The responses we get from parent questionnaires contribute to the determination of policies and procedures within school. These are the results of our most recent parental questionnaires.
Parent Questionnaire October Parent Evening 23 Reception
Parent View (OFSTED)
Parent View is a tool for parents of the school that plays a significant role in feedback when it comes to the time of an OFSTED inspection. Inspectors take a significant amount of time to read this feedback, alongside our paper questionnaires and other inspection criteria, in order to make a judgement and rating.
To register click on the link above and complete the 12 questions that are available to you for feedback, for more information on how to use Parent View
