The Reception Year is an exciting new chapter for children and their families. We work hard to make this transition as seamless as possible, helping every child feel ready and eager to start school. To support this, we’ve planned several transition opportunities for families to take part in together.

Transition to Year 7 is an exciting milestone for our pupils, and at Monkshouse Primary Academy we work throughout the year to help them feel confident and prepared for this next big step. Children are given regular opportunities to talk about the changes ahead, share their thoughts, and explore what secondary school life will be like.
Transition is supported through our PSHE curriculum, where pupils explore themes such as managing change, building resilience, developing independence, and maintaining positive relationships. These lessons help children understand their emotions, cope with new situations, and make responsible decisions: our pupils leave Monkshouse Primary Academy with the confidence, self-awareness, and adaptability needed to navigate the transition successfully. In addition, our school ELSA is available to work with children on a one to one basis if more personalised transition sessions are needed.
We maintain close communication with the secondary schools our pupils will be attending to ensure that the right support is in place. Where appropriate, we offer an individualised transition plan which may include extra visits, meetings with key staff, and tailored resources to help each child feel ready and positive about the move.
