Why did the Romans invade
and settle in Britain?
This term, Year 3 are travelling back in time to explore the fascinating world of Ancient Rome and discover how the Romans changed life in Britain forever.
Why Did the Romans Come to Britain?
The children are learning about the reasons behind the Roman invasion in AD 43, including:
- Rich resources such as metals and farmland
- Expanding the Roman Empire
- Power and prestige for Emperor Claudius
- Control of trade across Europe
What Made the Roman Army So Powerful?
Year 3 are investigating what made the Roman army one of the most successful fighting forces in history. They are exploring:
- Strong armour and clever weapons
- Strict discipline and daily training
- Smart battle tactics
- Impressive engineering skills
How Did the Britons React?
Using a range of historical sources, the children are discovering how different British tribes responded to the invasion. They will learn about:
- Resistance, including the famous rebellion led by Boudicca
- Alliances with Rome
- What archaeology and Roman writers tell us about this period
How the Romans Changed Britain
Finally, Year 3 will explore the lasting impact of Roman rule, including:
- New towns, roads, and buildings
- Changes in food, clothing, and daily life
- The introduction of new laws, language, and beliefs
