Owls

Welcome to Owls Class

PE days for Term 5 are:

MONDAYS & TUESDAYS

We are a Year 5 class taught by Mrs Roberts.

I love staying active and keeping fit, as it helps me feel energised and ready for each day in school. Outside of work, I really enjoy spending time with my family, whether that’s getting outdoors or just doing things together. I’m also a big fan of reading and love sharing great stories and books with the children, helping to spark their imagination and enjoyment of learning.

What are we learning about this Term?

Would You Like to Live in the Desert?

This term, Year 5 will explore the big question: Would you like to live in the desert? Children will investigate what deserts are really like, how people and animals survive there, and how these unique environments compare to our own local area.

Understanding World Biomes

Children will begin by learning about:

  • What a biome is
  • The different biomes found across the world
  • Where deserts are located on a world map

They will discover that deserts are not just hot, sandy places – they can be cold, rocky, and incredibly varied.

Spotlight on the Mojave Desert

The unit includes a detailed study of the Mojave Desert in North America. Pupils will explore:

  • Its climate and weather patterns
  • Physical features such as sand dunes, canyons, and rock formations
  • The plants and animals specially adapted to survive in extreme conditions

How Humans Use Desert Environments

Children will investigate:

  • How people live, work, and travel in desert regions
  • How communities adapt to limited water and extreme temperatures
  • The ways deserts are used for farming, tourism, and energy production

This helps pupils understand the challenges and opportunities deserts present.

Environmental Challenges

The unit also explores important environmental issues, including:

  • Water scarcity
  • Desertification
  • The impact of climate change on fragile desert ecosystems

Children will consider how these challenges affect both people and wildlife.

Comparing Deserts with Our Local Area

Using maps, photographs, and digital tools, pupils will compare:

  • The Mojave Desert
  • Their own local area of Spalding

They will identify similarities and differences in climate, land use, population, and physical features.

By the end of the unit, children will be able to explain what life in a desert is really like – and decide for themselves whether they would want to live there.
