Finches

Welcome to Finches Class

PE days for Term 3 are:

MONDAYS & TUESDAYS

We are a Year 1 class taught by Mrs Jensen.

We are one of two Year 1 classes at Monkshouse where we love to learn as we play.

We like to stay as active as we can during the day and especially love time to run between our lessons. We are great at junk modelling and have some great ideas for inventions. It is amazing what we can make from egg boxes and Sellotape!

What are we learning about this Term?

This term in Geography, pupils will be developing their understanding of the United Kingdom and the world around them through practical map work, seasonal study, and weather observation.

Learning About the United Kingdom

Children will learn to:

  • Name and locate the four countries of the UK — England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
  • Identify the country they live in and recognise key features on a simple map.
  • Build confidence using maps to understand where places are in relation to each other.

Understanding the Seasons

We will continue to explore:

  • The four seasons — spring, summer, autumn, and winter.
  • The current season, noticing how the environment changes around us.
  • Seasonal differences in daylight, temperature, clothing, and nature.

These observations help pupils make sense of the natural patterns they see throughout the year.

Exploring Direction and Weather

Pupils will be introduced to:

  • The four compass directions — north, south, east, and west.
  • How to use these directions to describe where things are.
  • Daily weather patterns, including sunshine, rain, wind, and cloud cover.
  • Simple ways to describe and record weather over time.

This hands‑on work encourages children to observe their environment closely and use geographical vocabulary with confidence.
