Mrs Wickham Year 2 - Kingfishers
Welcome to Kingfisher Class
The class teacher is Mrs Wickham and the class teaching assistant is Mrs Rowe.
Term 5 - How Does Your Garden Grow
Tiptoe through the tulips as your senses discover the blooming foliage and enchanted fragrances of flowers and herbs. Round and round the mulberry bush we go, planting bulbs and seeds, and then watch them grow beneath sunshine and showers.
Explore the astounding world of the garden, but be careful, there are some wild and dangerous plants out there that do astonishing things-just don’t touch!
Use the marvellous properties of plants, flowers and herbs to make an exceptional gift for somebody special. Everything is coming up roses! Why not grow your own?
This term, in science, children will be describing how plants grow and identifying what a plant needs for healthy growth and survival. In DT children will be making their own bird scarers.
English – In English children will be reading non-chronological reports about plants and gardening, then using this information to write their own report. Next, the children will go on to make their own discovery of a new type of flower! They will present their findings to the class.
Maths- The measurements of length and height are taught this term along with the geometry elements of position and direction. Problem solving using all four calculations will also be revisited.
We are all looking forward to an exciting term!
A-Life came into school to talk to us about healthy lifestyles and keeping our own bodies healthy. They had lots of activity stations for the children to visit and find out about being healthy for themselves. The children learnt that, amazingly, 80% of their bodies are made up of water and they need 12 hours sleep a night to help their brains and bodies stay healthy.
This term we are finding out how music makes the world a better place. We have been learning to sing the 'Rainbow' song and this week we had great fun putting an accompaniment to the song using the glockenspiels.
As our topic is 'How Does Your Garden Grow', we have been doing a lot of planting this term. We have planted out sunflower seeds and they are looking very healthy. Some will go into the school garden and some may well be coming home to be planted out in the children's own gardens.
Today we planted some gladioli bulbs to brighten up the school garden. We used compostable paper plant pots to help the environment.
We are making bird scarers in DT so we looked at different ways to join fabric. The children found threading a needle particularly frustrating but it made Mrs Wickham laugh to see the concentration on their faces!
We have been measuring in Maths and Mrs Wickham set the class the challenge to stand in height order without talking! The class did a brilliant job with some people taking charge through mime! We then measured different objects in the classroom using non-standard measures.
