Our termly topics this year are:

Term 1 - Raising The Drawbridge

Climbing the battlements or finding out about dragons, princes and princesses, there’s a whole world of adventure and fun to be found! This term, we will explore the towers, battlements and the keep of a castle and find out about the people who lived there! We’ll learn all about the different parts of a castle and describe how they have changed over time. Using a wide range of materials, we’ll build models of castles and test the strength of our structures. We’ll learn the stories of Rapunzel, The Egg and The Paper Bag Princess and write stories and letters inspired by them. Maps and photographs will help us learn about our local area and also show us where we could still find a castle in our home county of Lincolnshire.

Term 2 - World on a Plate

This is a new, exciting topic for Year 2 this year. What’s on your dinner plate? Do you know where the food has come from? This term we will be flying around the world, over the seven continents and 5 oceans to find out where our food comes form. We will stopping off in Kenya to compare this African country to England: looking at food grown on the land, climate and clothing.

We will read the stories of Handa’s Surprise, Bringing the Rain to the Kapiti Plain and We’re Going on a Lion Hunt. We will write winter poetry, instructions and stories based on these texts.

Term 3 - Extreme Habitats

This is another new, exciting topic for Year 2 this year. Off on our travels around the world we go again! This time we will be visiting the extreme climates of the world, flying to the North and South Poles and along the Equator to compare and contrast the hot and cold environments. There we will discover the animals who call these extreme locations home. We will look at how they have adapted to their habitats and how they survive in these harsh climates.

Our English will focus on the film Happy Feet, and the books Lost and Found and Penguin Small. We will also look at Lord of the Forest and Greta and the Giants, to highlight our need to save our planet.

Term 4- Street Detectives

Get your magnifying glasses out and discover what is in your local area. During this term, we will pound the local streets searching for street furniture and spotting different types of housing along the way. We will create our own maps of our surroundings and look at aerial photographs to see how Spalding has changed over the years. We will make our own houses with moving parts and use these to create our own stop-motion films.

Our texts will be Beegu, Journey, Return and The Smartest Giant in Town and through these we will be writing non- chronological reports and diaries.

Term 5 - How Does Your Garden Grow

Let’s tiptoe through the tulips together and discover the sights, sounds and smells of the garden. This half term, we’ll find out how to look after plants, ask questions and appreciate the flowers. We’ll write an information book about plants, follow instructions, enjoy the story of 'Arthur and The Invisibles' through visual literacy and write stories of our own. Discovering our green fingers will be fun when we plant and tend a variety of seeds and bulbs. We’ll also learn about the different parts of a plant.. Our senses will help us describe and sort a range of smells and we’ll make beautifully scented products. We’ll look closely at a wide variety of plants and create detailed, observational drawings.

Term 6 - Sun, Sea and Sand

Come with us to explore the beach, feel the sand between your toes and build sandcastles! This term we will virtually (and hopefully, physically) go to the seaside and explore what a coastal town has to offer. We will compare and contrast our own town of Spalding with a coastal town and find out about the many different seaside towns around the UK. We will look at the importance of the Victorian influence on travel to the seaside. We will explore the seven seas and find out what it was like to be a pirate sailing the high seas looking for ships to plunder! Will Year 2s decide a pirate's life is for them?

We are all looking forward to an exciting year!
