At Monkshouse School, we aim to help children develop their knowledge and understanding of Mathematics in an enjoyable way, but one which will also fit them for lifelong learning. We aim to develop mathematical thinkers, who are able to apply their knowledge, through challenging and stimulating activities both in and outside of the classroom. The intention being that the children develop a positive and confident attitude to mathematics and reach their full potential as mathematicians.

Mathematics is a core subject in the National Curriculum and at our school we have fully embedded and embraced the changes that the New Curriculum from September 2014 introduced. This states that children:-

Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time

Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication.

Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language

The expectation is that the majority of pupils will move through the programmes of study at broadly the same pace. However, decisions about when to progress will always be based on the security of pupils’ understanding and their readiness to progress to the next stage. Pupils who grasp concepts rapidly will be challenged through being offered rich and sophisticated problems that encourage deeper understanding of concepts taught before any acceleration through new content.

Those who are not sufficiently fluent with earlier material will consolidate their understanding, including additional practice, before moving on.

With the new Mathematics Curriculum, it is essential that each child must meet all of the objectives by the time they move into the next year group. It is also expected that teachers make cross curricular links between so that pupils will become confident in the application of their mathematical knowledge to other subject areas. The Maths Curriculum is now set out into 6 sections.

Number – including Number and Place Value, Addition and Subtraction, Multiplication and Division and Fractions ( including Decimals (Year 4, 5 & 6) and Percentages (Year 5 & 6).


Ratio and Proportion (Year 6 only).

Algebra (Year 6 only).

Geometry – including Position and Direction.


The school uses the AET curriculum programme to assist with the delivery of mathematics in a structured and comprehensive way.

We use Rockstars multiplication tables daily to enable the children to learn their multiplication tables in an engaging way and to challenge themselves to beat their previous scores. We have also introduced on-line mathematics homework using ‘My Maths’ enabling the children to use ICT and support the lessons completed in class. CLIC (Counting, Learn its, It’s nothing new, Calculations) is also implemented at the start of lessons to practice and re-inforce concepts.

At Monkshouse School, all children's progress is regularly assessed and lessons are planned to have appropriate levels of challenge, support and differentiation.

Early Years

In the Foundation Stage, mathematical activities are planned for which address the requirements of the EYFS document. We provide opportunities for children to develop their understanding of number, measurement, pattern, shape and space through a variety of activities, both teacher and child initiated. This allows them to enjoy, explore, practice and talk confidently about mathematics.
